SUMMARY:Blacksmithing Basics
DESCRIPTION:Blacksmithing Basics\n \n \n \n \n \n Garry Kalajian \n \n \n \n \n \n Friday\, November 11th – Sunday\, November 13th \n8:00am – 4:00pm \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Workshop Overview\n \n \n \n \n \n Blacksmithing Basics is for students who are new to blacksmithing and those with some experience looking to improve their skillset. All students in the course will work with a traditional coal forge. Students will begin with an introduction to body mechanics and safety. Once in the studio\, students will learn to start and manage a coal-fired forge. Attention will be given to how to maximize draft\, prepare and manage the coal-fuel\, and distinguish the right temperature for various forge processes. Hammering techniques will be demonstrated. As the workshop progresses\, different forging techniques will be covered including drawing out\, upsetting\, punching\, slitting\, drifting\, bending\, and forge welding. Students will then apply these skills to create a gate hook\, trivet\, and chisel. If time allows\, additional projects can be explored\, such as a fire poker or toasting fork. Those who have some previous blacksmithing experience are welcome to undertake a special project for more in-depth instruction. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Skills + Techniques\n \n \n \n \n \n Students will learn: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nWork with a traditional coal forge and mild steel\nBody mechanics\, metallurgy\, and safety\nStart and manage a coal-fired forge\nMaximize draft\, prepare and manage coal-fuel\nDistinguish the right temperature for various forge processes\nVarious forging techniques will be explored\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Instructor\n \n \n \n \n \n Garry Kalajian  \n \n Learn More \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tools + Materials\n \n \n \n \n \n Students should bring: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nStudents may bring forge tools they would prefer to use over those at Sanborn Mills Farm\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Material Fee: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nAll materials and supplies are included in registration cost\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n COVID-19 \n \n \n \n \n \n \nPlease read our COVID-19 Policy prior to registering\nWe are honoring each instructor’s specific COVID-19 safety requests. DESCRIPTION:Blacksmithing Basics\n \n \n \n \n \n Garry Kalajian \n \n \n \n \n \n Friday\, September 30th- Sunday\, October 2nd \n8:00am – 4:00pm \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Workshop Overview\n \n \n \n \n \n Blacksmithing Basics is for students who are new to blacksmithing and those with some experience looking to improve their skillset. All students in the course will work with a traditional coal forge and mild steel. Students will begin with an introduction to body mechanics\, metallurgy\, and safety. Once in the studio\, students will learn to start and manage a coal-fired forge. Attention will be given to how to maximize draft\, prepare and manage the coal-fuel\, and distinguish the right temperature for various forge processes. Hammering techniques will be demonstrated. As the workshop progresses\, different forging techniques will be covered including drawing out\, upsetting\, punching\, slitting\, drifting\, and forge welding. Students will then apply these skills to create a gate hook\, trivet\, and chisel. If time allows\, additional projects can be explored\, such as a fire poker or toasting fork. Those who have some previous blacksmithing experience are welcome to undertake a special project for more in-depth instruction. All special projects must be discussed with instructor Kalajian before the course. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Skills + Techniques\n \n \n \n \n \n Students will learn: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nWork with a traditional coal forge and mild steel\nBody mechanics\, metallurgy\, and safety\nStart and manage a coal-fired forge\nMaximize draft\, prepare and manage coal-fuel\nDistinguish the right temperature for various forge processes\nVarious forging techniques will be explored\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Instructor\n \n \n \n \n \n Garry Kalajian \n \n Learn More \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n COVID-19 \n \n \n \n \n \n \nPlease read our COVID-19 Policy prior to registering\nWe are honoring each instructor’s specific COVID-19 safety requests. DESCRIPTION:Blacksmithing Basics\n \n \n \n \n \n Garry Kalajian \n \n \n \n \n \n Friday\, August 26th – Sunday\, August 28th \n8:00am – 4:00pm \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Workshop Overview\n \n \n \n \n \n Blacksmithing Basics is for students who are new to blacksmithing and those with some experience looking to improve their skillset. DESCRIPTION:Blacksmithing Basics\n \n \n \n \n \n Friday\, May 27th – Sunday\, May 29th\, 2022 \n8:00am – 4:00 pm \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Workshop Overview\n \n \n \n \n \n Blacksmithing Basics is for students who are new to blacksmithing and those with some experience looking to improve their skillset. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Skills + Techniques\n \n \n \n \n \n Students will learn: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nWork with a traditional coal forge and mild steel\nBody mechanics\, metallurgy\, and safety\nStart and manage a coal-fired forge\nMaximize draft\, prepare and manage coal-fuel\nDistinguish the right temperature for various forge processes\nVarious forging techniques will be explored\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Instructor\n \n \n \n \n \n Garry Kalajian \n \n Learn More \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tools + Materials\n \n \n \n \n \n Students should bring: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nStudents may bring forge tools they would prefer to use over those at Sanborn Mills Farm\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Material Fee: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nAll materials and supplies are included in registration cost\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n COVID-19 \n \n \n \n \n \n \nPlease read our COVID-19 Policy prior to registering\nWe are honoring each instructor’s specific COVID-19 safety requests. DESCRIPTION:Blacksmithing\nMake a Hand Axe\n \n \n \n \n \n Lucian Avery \n \n \n \n \n \n Friday\, May 6th – Sunday\, May 8th \n8:00am – 4:00pm \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Workshop Overview\n \n \n \n \n \n This Workshop is full. You may join the waitlist or find a similar workshop on a different date. \n \n \n \n \n \n In this three-day workshop\, students will make a one-pound hand ax that can be used at home\, in the woodshed\, or on all of your outdoor adventures. The first two days will be spent forging the ax head out of salvaged steel. After completing the basic shape\, it will be heat-treated and sharpened. On the third day\, students will use hand tools to hang the handle\, carving and securing it to the ax head. Students will then be able to try their ax out on a small woodworking project. If time permits\, students will make a protective sheath out of rawhide. Along the way there will be discussions on ax design\, basic metallurgy and heat treating\, as well as how to use an ax safely and effectively. Experience with a coal-fired forge and basic forging techniques will be helpful\, but beginners who are up for a challenge are also welcome. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Skills + Techniques\n \n \n \n \n \n Students will learn: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nForge an axe head out of salvaged steel\nHeat-treat and sharp the forved axe blade \nUse hand tools to hang\, carve\, and secure axe head\nSome woodworking\nMake a protective sheath out of raw hide\, if time permits\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Instructor\n \n \n \n \n \n Lucian Avery \n \n Learn More \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tools + Materials\n \n \n \n \n \n Students should bring: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nStudents may bring forge tools they would prefer to use over those at Sanborn Mills Farm\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Material Fee: \n \n \n \n \n \n \n$35.00 paid at the time of workshop \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n COVID-19 \n \n \n \n \n \n \nPlease read our COVID-19 Policy prior to registering\nWe are honoring each instructor’s specific COVID-19 safety requests. You may join the waitlist or find a similar workshop on a different date. \n \n \n \n \n \n Blacksmithing Basics is for students who are new to blacksmithing and those with some experience looking to improve their skillset. All special projects must be discussed with instructor Kalajian before the course.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Skills + Techniques\n \n \n \n \n \n Students will learn:\n \n \n \n \n \n \nWork with a traditional coal forge and mild steel\nBody mechanics\, metallurgy\, and safety\nStart and manage a coal-fired forge\nMaximize draft\, prepare\, and manage coal-fuel\nDistinguish the right temperature for various forge processes\nVarious forging techniques will be explored\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Instructor\n \n \n \n \n \n Garry Kalajian\n \n Learn More \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tools + Materials\n \n \n \n \n \n Students should bring:\n \n \n \n \n \n \nStudents may bring forge tools they would prefer to use over those at Sanborn Mills Farm\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Material Fee:\n \n \n \n \n \n \nAll materials and supplies are included in registration cost\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n COVID-19 \n \n \n \n \n \n \nPlease read our COVID-19 Policy prior to registering\nWe are honoring each instructor’s specific COVID-19 safety requests.
