SUMMARY:Blacksmithing Basics
DESCRIPTION:Blacksmithing Basics\n \n \n \n \n \n Garry Kalajian \n \n \n \n \n \n Friday\, September 30th- Sunday\, October 2nd \n8:00am – 4:00pm \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Workshop Overview\n \n \n \n \n \n Blacksmithing Basics is for students who are new to blacksmithing and those with some experience looking to improve their skillset. All students in the course will work with a traditional coal forge and mild steel. Students will begin with an introduction to body mechanics\, metallurgy\, and safety. Once in the studio\, students will learn to start and manage a coal-fired forge. Attention will be given to how to maximize draft\, prepare and manage the coal-fuel\, and distinguish the right temperature for various forge processes. Hammering techniques will be demonstrated. As the workshop progresses\, different forging techniques will be covered including drawing out\, upsetting\, punching\, slitting\, drifting\, and forge welding. Students will then apply these skills to create a gate hook\, trivet\, and chisel. If time allows\, additional projects can be explored\, such as a fire poker or toasting fork. Those who have some previous blacksmithing experience are welcome to undertake a special project for more in-depth instruction. All special projects must be discussed with instructor Kalajian before the course. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Skills + Techniques\n \n \n \n \n \n Students will learn: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nWork with a traditional coal forge and mild steel\nBody mechanics\, metallurgy\, and safety\nStart and manage a coal-fired forge\nMaximize draft\, prepare and manage coal-fuel\nDistinguish the right temperature for various forge processes\nVarious forging techniques will be explored\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Instructor\n \n \n \n \n \n Garry Kalajian \n \n Learn More \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n COVID-19 \n \n \n \n \n \n \nPlease read our COVID-19 Policy prior to registering\nWe are honoring each instructor’s specific COVID-19 safety requests. DESCRIPTION:Blacksmithing\nForge Welding: A Closer Look into Process and Product\n \n \n \n \n \n Garry Kalajian \n \n \n \n \n \n Saturday\, October 15th- Sunday\, October 16th \n8:00am – 4:00pm \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Workshop Overview\n \n \n \n \n \n In this two-day course\, students will learn the process of Forge Welding and apply the technique to create advanced pieces. Students will learn the basics of all forge welds: create and manage a perfect coal fire\, properly position one or more bars in it\, identify the right heat for a successful weld\, administer flux\, create a basket weave element\, and join bars by hammering. Students will then learn more advanced welding practices and explore opportunities to apply the welded bars in more demanding pieces. Possibilities include a tripod base for a candle holder or fire tool stand or chisel with a tool steel bit. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Skills + Techniques\n \n \n \n \n \n Students will learn: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nBasics of all forge welds\nCreate and manage a perfect coal fire\nProperly position one or more bars\nIdentify the right heat for a successful weld\, administer flux\, and join bars by hammering\nMore advanced welding practices \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Instructor\n  \n \n \n \n \n \n Garry Kalajian \n \n Learn More \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n COVID-19 \n \n \n \n \n \n \nPlease read our COVID-19 Policy prior to registering\nWe are honoring each instructor’s specific COVID-19 safety requests.
