You may join the waitlist or find a similar workshop on a different date. \n \n \n \n \n \n On the first day\, students will forge a Scandinavian style carving knife blade. The bevel will be filed carefully by hand. Then the blade will be hardened and tempered. On the second day\, students will finish up their knife blade and make a wooden handle shaped to fit comfortably in their hand. Next\, the blade will be honed to a razor edge. After the knife is complete\, each student will make a birch bark sheath. This workshop is best suited to students with basic experience managing a coal fire and drawing a taper. Beginners who are up for a challenge are also welcome. No forge welding experience is needed. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Skills + Techniques\n \n \n \n \n \n Students will learn: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nForging a Scandinavian style carving knife \nBasic metallurgy\nFiling\, heat treating\, and sharpening a blade\nLocal wood selection for handle\nCreating a birch bark sheath \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Instructor\n \n \n \n \n \n Lucian Avery \n \n Learn More \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tools + Materials\n \n \n \n \n \n Students should bring: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nStudents may bring forge tools they would prefer to use over those at Sanborn Mills Farm\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Material Fee: \n \n \n \n \n \n \n$25.00 paid at time of workshop\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n COVID-19 \n \n \n \n \n \n \nPlease read our COVID-19 Policy prior to registering\nWe are honoring each instructor’s specific COVID-19 safety requests.
